open mind

so last night allison and i went to the sienna francis homeless shelter for dinner. sitting at a table with four others, conversation got off to a slow start..i didn't want to make the wrong comment or respond poorly to a situation. but shortly after receiving our bbq beef sandwiches, the gentleman next to allison piped up and asked what we were studying at creighton. it was obvious that we didn't belong, but the fact that he immediately assumed (and was right) about who we were shocked me. we talked a bit about our majors, then moved on to hearing about his life. the experiences he had faced were difficult, but it was obvious that he is now making positive changes in his life. by the end of dinner, although it may have still been a little awkward, we were laughing and having a good conversation about his children. its amazing how in the span of 30 minutes you can go from being complete strangers to practically knowing someone's life story.
